Lochside Distillery was founded in 1957 on site, which since the 1890s hosted a brewery. Originally it was equipped with 21 meters high Coffey still, then four pot stills were added. Lochside was one of a few distilleries, which produced grain and malt whisky on site. In 1973 Destilerias y Crianza of Madrid took over the operations and immediately ceased grain whisky production while using malt whisky as the main component for their Spanish blends. Lochside Distillery did not survive the 1980s industry downturn, it was mothballed in 1992 and demolished in 2005. Here we got an excellent 1981 Vintage bottling, part of Gordon & MacPhail Rare Old range (RO/15/07). The whisky comes from refill remade ex-sherry hogshead, which in 2015 yielded 161 bottles.
Nose: floral and fruity, rose petals, apples and pears, ground coffee, dark chocolate, beeswax, hints of lime and delicate herbal notes.
Palate: fruity with subtle spiciness, raspberries, black currants, bananas, passion fruit, dark chocolate, pepper, hints of licorice and charred oak.
Finish: pretty long with lingering fruitiness and touch of garden herbs.
