Longmorn Distillery was founded in 1894 by John Duff and is currently owned by Chivas Bros, subsidiary of Pernod Ricard. The distillery produces close to 4.5 million liters of spirit per annum with majority of the output going into Chivas Regal 18 years old and Chivas Royal Salute. In recent years Chivas Bros put little more effort for promoting Longmorn brand, but Glenlivet and Aberlour still consume most of the company marketing budget. Here we have an excellent single cask expression, part of Gordon & MacPhail Reserve range. The whisky aged in first fill sherry butt no. 1084 filled on March 6, 1972 was bottled at natural strength of 53.4% for G&M Dutch importer, Van Wees, in June 2011. Only 422 bottles were produced.
Nose: pretty complex, red berries, raisins, prunes, honey, toffee, hints of soy sauce and dried mushrooms, some hay, touch of tobacco and polished oak.
Palate: rich, a basket of berries, bitter oranges, mango, licorice, notes of espresso, caramel, toffee, cloves, tobacco, leather and delicate oakiness.
Finish: long, fruity and slightly spicy, cherries, prunes, dark chocolate, licorice and pepper.
