A’bunadh was introduced in 1997 and for the first couple of years was available only in Travel Retail outlets. The word “a’bunadh” means “the origins” in Gaelic and the whisky is matured exclusively in sherry wood with an emphasis on second fill ex-Oloroso butts, and bottled uncut and unchill-filtered. It carries no age statement; we were told that it comprises whiskies aged from 8 to 15 years. Batch # 50 was launched in December 2016. Aberlour is currently ranked number 6 on the single malt best selling list with 3.5 million bottles sold annually worldwide.
Nose: deep and powerful, big Oloroso sherry influence, dark chocolate, bitter orange marmalade, red currants, almonds, allspice, raisins, hints of leather and oak.
Palate: full and rich, black cherries, bitter oranges, raspberry jam, nougat, raisins, caramel, coffee, honey roasted almonds, hints of cinnamon and nutmeg.
Finish: very long and spicy, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, ginger, touch of dark chocolate and oak.
