In 1999 Gordon & MacPhail, the renowned Independent Bottler, added new range into its extensive whisky portfolio. It was called Rare Old and included whiskies predominantly from distilleries no longer in operation, quite often no longer in existence. Banff Distillery definitely fits that profile – built in 1824, survived fire destruction in 1877 and bombing in 1941, but didn’t survive a massive downturn of the 1980s and ceased operation in 1983. Banff 1966, part of Rare Old range (lot no RO/15/03) contains whisky from refill sherry butt, bottled in 2015 at natural strength of 45.2% abv.
Nose: strong sherry statement, stewed apples, figs, candied orange peel, lemons, hints of rose petals and tobacco, old leather and oak.
Palate: black pepper and dried fruits, prunes, figs, bitter orange marmalade, grapefruits, crème brûlée, dark chocolate, hints of nutmeg and charred oak.
Finish: medium long, oak, leather and shy notes of dried fruit.
