Solera is a system employed by makers of Pedro Ximénez sherry. Young wine in vats of the top tier of solera is successively blended into the more mature wine in the vats on the tier below. The vats are never empty. Glenfiddich has been employing solera system since 1998. The whisky aged in ex-sherry casks and plain oak casks is mellowed in large oak solera vat. The vat has been kept half full of whiskies since 1998. The Solera became the first 15 years old expression to enter the top ten best selling single malts. It scored silver medal at the 2014 International Wine & Spirit Competition.
