In the late 2013 Diageo announced The Orphan Barrel Whisky Project, a collection of different whiskeys “miraculously found” in the company warehouses. The first two expressions released in the early 2014 were Kentucky Bourbons, Old Blowhard 26 years old and six years younger Barterhouse. In February 2016 Diageo launched The Gifted Horse described as “mistake whiskey”. Apparently 17 years old Kentucky Straight Bourbon from Bernheim Distillery was mixed unintentionally with 4 years old bourbon and 4 years old corn whisky from MGP of Indiana. The content of each whiskey was: 38.5% 17 y.o. bourbon, 51% 4 y.o. bourbon and 10.5% corn. This unique blend was bottled at 115 US proof (57.5% abv) in Tullahoma, Tennessee.
Nose: pretty sweet, vanilla, cinnamon, cornflakes, maple syrup, candied orange peel, hints of marzipan and oak.
Palate: nicely balanced, baked apples, cinnamon, caramel, buttered popcorn, maple syrup, pepper, cloves and distinctive oaky bitterness.
Finish: medium long, spirity and oaky, with delicate spicy notes.
