Macallan 18 years old debuted in 1984. It was a limited edition of 1965 Vintage and in the next couple of decades the 18 years old expressions carried vintage destination. That changed in 2004, with the launch of Fine Oak (combination of ex-sherry and ex-bourbon casks) and Sherry Oak ranges. The bottle presented here was part of 2012 release and contains whisky distilled in 1994 (and earlier), aged exclusively in Spanish oak sherry casks and bottled for the US market.
Nose: rich, raspberries, strawberries, black cherries, freshly ground coffee, honey, toffee, caramel, roasted chestnuts, touch of tobacco and fading hints of smoke.
Palate: powerful, fruity, prunes, dried figs and apricots, dark chocolate, hazelnuts, honey, hints of leather and tobacco, candied ginger and a whiff of smoke.
Finish: long and nicely balanced, dried fruit, chocolate and lingering oaky dryness.
