Laphroaig is by far the best selling Islay malt with 3.2 million bottles sold globally each year. The distillery still produces its own malt, however it covers only 15% of the requirement. Own malt has phenols’ specification up to 60 ppm, while the remaining part supplied by Port Ellen phenols level varies from 35 to 45 ppm. Laphroaig 10 years old Cask Strength expression was introduced in 1995 and remains Laphroaig aficionados’ favorite expression. Since 2009 it has been released in small batches, Batch 004 was bottled in February 2012.
Nose: earthy, smoky and peaty, seaweed, iodine, vanilla, caramel, dark chocolate, apples and plums, hints of pepper and salt.
Palate: smoky and spicy, pepper, ginger, touch of coriander and licorice, vanilla, salty caramel, hints of leather and coffee and delicate oaky notes.
Finish: long and smoky, combination of vanilla sweetness, sea salt and spiciness.
