Tomatin Distillery sits in Scottish Highlands in Inverness-shire. In the 1970s it was the largest malt distillery in Scotland with the capacity of 13 million liters of spirit per annum. The distillery went bankrupt in 1985 and was subsequently taken over by two Japanese companies: Takara Shuzo and Okura & Co. Tomatin is the first Scottish distillery owned by the Japanese. After being downsized Tomatin can produce about 6 million liters of spirit per annum and it has been running at little less than 50% of its capacity. In recent years the owners have been very active marketing the brand and widening the product range. The 30 years old expression was launched in 2011. It is a combination of ex-bourbon hogsheads and ex-Oloroso sherry butts.
Nose: very fruity, apples, black currants, honeydew melon, mango, papaya, beeswax, vanilla, buttered toast, hints of garden herbs and touch of oak.
Palate: fruity sweetness balanced with delicate spicy and oaky notes, oranges, pineapples, gooseberries, honey roasted nuts, ginger, lemon pepper, hints of cinnamon and herbs.
Finish: long and clean, tropical fruits, dark chocolate, pepper and cinnamon.
