The last change in ownership of Bushmills Distillery took place in the late 2014, when Diageo sold it to Casa Cuervo S.A de C.V. the Mexican company, producer of José Cuervo, the best selling tequila in the world. Two years later the new owners announced £30 million investment in order to double the production to 9 million liters of spirit per annum. The vast majority of Bushmills spirit ages in white American oak barrels with the very little addition of different types of wood. Here we an unusual expression of Bushmills, whisky distilled in 1988, aged in ex-rum barrel (no. 14355) and bottled at natural strength of 53.8% abv (cask strength bottlings of Bushmills are extremely rare). The cask was bottled for the French retailer La Maison du Whisky in 2002.
Nose: sweet and elegant, vanilla custard, honey, cotton candy, apples, pears, bananas, rum soaked raisins, hints of jasmine and oak.
Palate: very fruity, apples, plums, grapes, oranges, cantaloupe, caramel, butterscotch, nougat, halvah and touch of oak.
Finish: long and sweet, caramel, butterscotch, oranges and raisins.
