Springbank Local Barley is an ionic range of 1965/1966 expressions released in the 1990s and discontinued in 2001 (it was re-introduced in 2016 with the 1999 Vintage bottling). It contained whisky distilled from barley sourced locally, within few miles from the distillery. Even in the 1990s when demand for single malts represented just a fraction of what we are experiencing today the Local Barley bottlings scored high ratings and demand outstripped supply. Here we have an excellent batch, whisky distilled in February 1966, aged for 31 years in bourbon oak cask no. 1966 478 and bottled at natural strength of 51,9% in February 1997.
Nose: rich and complex, ferns and pine needles, apples, coconut, candied lemon peel, vanilla, honey, caramel, pepper, tobacco leaves, touch of leather and distant whiff of sea breeze.
Palate: fresh and fruity, apples, oranges, bananas, vanilla custard, candied ginger, lemon pepper, dash of salt and subtle tobacco and herbal notes.
Finish: long, fruity and pretty spicy with notes of apples and pears, vanilla, pepper, tobacco and leather.
