Laphroaig Càirdeas (Gaelic for friendship) was introduced in 2008, a limited edition of 3600 bottles released for the Friends of Laphroaig for the annual Fèis Ìle (the Islay Festival of Whisky and Music). The following year brought another ‘friendship edition’ this time John Campbell, Laphroaig Master Distiller, selected whisky aged for 12 years in Maker’s Mark bourbon barrels (Maker’s Mark is a wheated bourbon). Càirdeas 2009 was bottled at natural strength of 57.5% abv with an outrun of 4000 bottles exclusively for The Friends of Laphroaig.
Nose: peaty and fruity, with very little medicinal notes, bananas, apples, pears,
vanilla, marzipan and almonds, hints of tar and pencil shavings.
Palate: nicely balanced, candied lemon peel, apples, gooseberries, roasted almonds, vanilla, cappuccino, touch of licorice and pepper and a whiff of peat smoke.
Finish: long, initially sweet, becomes smoky and dry in the end.
