An unusual bottling of Laphroaig commemorating the opening of Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport, one of the busiest airports on the planet (the terminal is designed to handle 35 million passengers a year). The construction started in September 2002 and the terminal was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II in a ceremony on March 14, 2008. For that occasion John Campbell, Laphroaig Distillery manager, selected 9 finest casks as the most representative Laphroaig of its age. They were bottled at natural strength of 53.4% abv with two releases of 750 and 1427 bottles. Our bottle is part of the former, no. 57 of 750.
Nose: very maritime, seaweed, sea breeze, wet sandy beach, smoked salmon, quince jelly, vanilla, toffee, touch of ginger and eucalyptus, all wrapped in peat smoke.
Palate: very complex, peaty, earthy, fruity and spicy, pepper, cloves, lemon grass, peaches, oranges, mango, vanilla custard and hints of charred oak.
Finish: huge, peaty, smoky, ashy, fruity, spicy, salty, oaky…
