The word ‘Lagavulin’ derives from the Gaelic Lag A’ Mhuillin meaning ‘mill in the hollow’. The distillery founded in 1816 by John Johnston stands near the ruins of Dunyveg Castle, in the past a stronghold of the Lord of the Isles. The distillery is now owned by Diageo and produces 2.5 million liters of spirit per annum working seven days a week. The distillery core range is rather modest, it contains three expressions – 12 years old Cask Strength, 16 years old and Distillers Edition (Pedro Ximénez sherry finish). It is supplemented however with limited releases, which are sought by collectors. The 1976 Vintage bottled after 30 years of aging falls in that category. The whisky was bottled at natural strength in 2006 with an outrun of 2340 bottles.
