Bowmore Distillery was established in 1779 and remains the oldest working distillery on the Isle of Islay. It is named after the administrative capital of the island, inhabited by less than 1000 residents. The word “bowmore” derives from Gaelic “bogh mòr” and means “great sea reef”. Since 1994 the distillery has been fully owned by Suntory and Bowmore Mizunara Oak Finish is an outcome of Japanese connection and recent boom of Japanese whisky. The whisky was aged in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks, then was transferred to Mizunara casks for 3 years. Released in 2015 at natural strength of 53.9% abv with an outrun of 2000 bottles. Mizunara oak grows very slowly, it is expensive and rare thus pretty seldom used for whisky aging (Suntory produces about 100 casks annually). Producer’s tasting notes:
Nose: spicy, mellow sweetness carried on a fresh ocean breeze.
Palate: sweet vanilla, cedar wood, exotic mango and honey rose blossom.
Finish: floral spice and fragrant smoke.
