Springbank Distillery was established in 1828 on the site of Archibald Mitchell’s illicit still. The distillery is still in hands of the founding family with Hedley G. Wright, Mitchell’s great, great grandson at the helm. In 2004 the Springbank Society was formed. The £50 lifetime membership grants several benefits with the most appealing being access to single casks unique to the Society. Here is an example, whisky distilled in June 1992 spent 14 years in a single bourbon hogshead and was bottled at natural strength of 55.3% abv in March 2007. Only 265 bottles were offered for sale exclusively to the Society members.
Nose: fruity and waxy, apples, pears, vanilla, toffee, touch of seaweed and hay, some pepper and delicate notes of peat and sea mist.
Palate: quite powerful, vanilla, caramel, baked apples, bananas, cinnamon, nutmeg, a cup of beef broth, pinch of salt and delicate oaky and peaty notes.
Finish: long, sweet and briny with gentle spicy and oaky notes.
