Springbank Distillery was established in 1828 on the site of Archibald Mitchell’s illicit still. The distillery remains in hands of the founding family with Hedley G. Wright, Mitchell’s great, great grandson at the helm. In 2004 the Springbank Society was formed. The £50 lifetime membership grants several benefits with the most appealing being access to single casks unique to the Society. Here is an example, whisky distilled in July 1997 spent 9 years in fresh rum butt and was bottled at natural strength of 60.2% abv in March 2007. The butt yielded 700 bottles, which were offered for sale exclusively to the Society members.
