Springbank Local Barley is an ionic range of 1965/1966 expressions released in the 1990s, discontinued in 2001 and re-introduced in 2016 with the 1999 Vintage bottling. The whisky was distilled from spring barley grown at Low Machrimore Farm in the south end of Kintyre peninsula and aged for 16 years in ex-bourbon casks (80%) and European oak sherry casks (20%). Springbank Local Barley is bottled at natural strength of 54.2% abv with only 9000 bottles available for worldwide distribution. The 2016 bottling is the first in a series of five expressions to be released over five years, however it is not clear at the moment if the last in the range will be 21 years old. (Producer’s tasting notes).
Nose: initially sweet and briny before notes of butter shortbread, vanilla, pear drops and raisin develop.
Palate: sweet and rounded with a very subtle peat influence combining with butter tablet, soft fruit and mineral notes.
Finish: a long evolving finish with notes reminiscent of our earthy dunnage warehouses; the peat is slightly more prominent and integrates well with lighter notes of candy and lemon zest.
