In May 2016 Brown-Forman Corporation, owners of Jack Daniel’s, put $416 million offer for BenRiach, GlenDronach and Glenglassaugh distilleries.
The sale supposed to be closed in the end of June 2016 and perhaps the second batch of Rare Cask Series was the last major release from Glenglassaugh under stewardship of Billy Walker. The batch contained eight single cask expressions ranging from 36 to 42 years old. Cask no. 2180 was filled in 1975 and its content was finished in Massandra Madeira puncheon, which yielded 588 bottles at 43.9% abv. Massandra winery founded by prince Lev Golitsyn in 1894 is the oldest winery in Crimea. It has been widely recognized for producing top quality wines including styles like Port or Madeira. Massandra wine repository contains more then 1 million bottles, some of which came from Russian Tsars collections.
Producer’s tasting notes:
Nose: warming black pepper and gentle hints of anise complemented apricot syrup and roasted orchard fruits.
Palate: rich golden sultanas soften to crème brûlée; mellow notes of toasted walnuts and hints of leather add great depth to the vintage final.
