Straight Rye whiskey, as a category, suffered terrible decline in the late 20th Century. Lack in demand matched lack in supply and just three commercial distilleries (Jim Beam, Heaven Hill and Wild Turkey) kept the category alive, distilling from rye mash a couple of days a year. The new Millennium reversed rye’s fortune; unfortunately it took distilleries few years to build equivalent inventory. Wild Turkey 101 Straight Rye is a perfect example of classic rye whiskey. It is distilled from mash containing 65% rye, 23% corn and 12% malted barley and bottled at 101 US Proof (50.5% abv), which is a favorite strength of Wild Turkey’s legendary master distiller Jimmy Russell.
