Pappy Van Winkle is arguably the most praised bourbon brand in the 21st Century. It is hard to believe now, that in 1972 due to lack of demand the family had to sell their shares in Stitzel-Weller Distillery and start operating as independent bottler. Since 2002 the Pappy Van Winkle brand has been produced in Buffalo Trace Distillery according to the original W.L. Weller recipe – 75% corn, 20% wheat and 5% malted barley. Stitzel-Weller Distillery closed in 1992 and its stock has been diminishing. We’ve heard that the company still uses Stitzel-Weller whiskey for Pappy Van Winkle 20 years old and older, while 15 years old comprises whiskies distilled in Buffalo Trace. Whatever the case, demand for “Pappy” exceeds supply many times over and there is no change on the horizon.
Nose: very elegant, honey, vanilla, crème brûlée, buttered toast, cinnamon, touch of anise, oranges, dates, tobacco, toasted oak and subtle leathery notes.
Palate: very rich, vanilla, butterscotch, maple syrup, salted caramel, oranges, pineapples, dashes of cinnamon and eucalyptus, some licorice and oak.
Finish: long and evolving, caramel, maple syrup, cinnamon, eucalyptus and oak.
