Springbank Distillery was founded in 1828 and today still remains in hands of descendants of the founding family. The distillery sits in the heart of Campbeltown, town/whisky-producing region situated on the Kintyre peninsula. Between 1880s and 1920 there were 34 operating distilleries, but only two survived to the new Millennium. The bottling presented here, by all means unique, commemorates 180th anniversary of the distillery. It is a vatting of two casks – refill ex-sherry hogshead no. 28, filled in 1993 and refill ex-sherry butt no. 18 filled in 1997. The whisky was released in 2008 exclusively for the members of Springbank Society, with an outrun of 850 bottles.
Nose: very appealing sherry statement, prunes, dark cherries, apricots, traces of sea mist and seaweed, caramel, hints of freshly brewed coffee, roasted nuts and distant hint of peat smoke.
Palate: beautifully balanced, distinctive sherry notes, dried apricots and figs, salted caramel, honey, dark chocolate, delicate oaky dryness and dash of garden herbs.
Finish: long and soothing, dark chocolate, dried fruit, sherried oak and salted nuts.
