Elijah Craig Bourbon bears name of the Baptist minister, named by many ‘the creator of bourbon’. Reverend Craig left Virginia to avoid prosecution from officials of the Church of England and settled in Lebanon (later Georgetown), Kentucky, where he preached, owned a paper mill and distilled whiskey. Giving Elijah Craig full credit for the bourbon creation is certainly a stretch since he had never operated outside of Georgetown and that town was never part of Bourbon County. Elijah Craig bourbon is produced by Heaven Hill Distillery from mash of 75% corn, 13% rye and 12% malted barley. The barrel proof edition debuted in the fall of 2013 and is being released four times a year ever since. Batch # 6 released in September 2014 was bottled at 70.1% abv, the highest ever for that brand.
Nose: spicy and oaky, cinnamon, cloves, aniseed, dried herbs, prunes, dried cherries, black currants, vanilla, dark caramel and touch of leather.
Palate: big and quite woody, toffee, caramel, vanilla, coffee, cornflakes, good balance between spice and dark fruit and touch of mint.
Finish: very long and complex, dried fruit, caramel, dark chocolate, mixed spice and roasted almonds.
