The Dant family name has been associated with Kentucky bourbon for almost two centuries. J.W. (Joseph Washington) Dant started distilling in Marion County, Kentucky around 1835. It was a small farm operation ran by J.W. and his sons. One of them, Joseph Bernard, went off on his own and created Yellowstone brand, which gained tremendous popularity on the West Coast. During the prohibition J.W. Dant bourbon was stored at the Stitzel-Weller bonded warehouse in Louisville and sold as “medicinal whiskey”. After the repeal in 1933 the brand changed ownership few times and finally landed in Heaven Hill portfolio. J.W. is a typical old-style everyday bourbon.
