Distillers Edition Series was launched in 1998 as an addition to the very popular Classic Malts range. Each of six classic single malts was finished in various types of wood; Lagavulin’s choice was ex-Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, in which whisky spent the final months of maturation. The whisky earned excellent reviews with an exception of very few aficionados claiming that sweet Pedro Ximénez sherry has too much of the tempering effect on the powerful Lagavulin’s palate. Lagavulin 1999 Vintage was part of the 2015 Distillers Edition series.
Nose: great balance between peat and fruit, (raspberries and raisins), maple syrup, vanilla, cinnamon, milk chocolate, hints of tobacco and iodine.
Palate: rich, smoky and slightly ashy, distinctive sherry sweetness, oranges, raisins, vanilla, tobacco, notes of cappuccino and hazelnuts.
Finish: long and smoky with notes of cocoa, pepper and delicate oaky bitterness.
