The story of Courvoisier begins in the outskirts of Paris in 1809. It was then that Emmanuel Courvoisier and Louis Gallois set up a wine and spirits company. Their initial aim was to trade in best cognacs, among others. It soon turned out that in order to have access to the best cognacs, they had to relocate to Cognac appellation and begin manufacturing the spirit themselves. The official Courvoisier headquarters are still located in the Château that Courvoisier and Gallois moved to in 1828. In 1869 the company was granted the title of official supplier to the imperial court by Napoleon III.
