Douglas Laing & Co, one of the most reputable independent bottling companies, used to be run by two Laing brothers, Stuart and Fred. In 2013, after almost 40 years of working together, the brothers parted their ways and split the old company portfolio. Fred Laing, who retained Douglas Laing name, launched XOP range the following year. XOP (Xtra Old Particular) contains the best of the best single malt and single grain whiskies from the family vaults. The 32 years old Port Ellen comes from a single refill hogshead (DL 10568) filled in October 1982. Bottled in December 2014 at natural strength of 53.9% abv with an outrun of 115 bottles. (Producer’s tasting notes.)
Nose: elegantly old Islay in style on the nose; sweet peat, malted barley, sand dunes and green fruits.
Palate: a welcome hint of tobacco on the palate develops to slightly burnt buttered toast, vanilla fudge and damp earth.
Finish: the finish shows a smoky style with a leather and salty tang and a touch of dark chocolate and charred oak.
