Westport is a little mysterious whisky brand, as Wilson & Morgan describes it ‘sublime blended malt from two very famous Highland distilleries’. In fact it is almost pure Glenmorangie with a teaspoon of Glen Moray. The very small percentage of Glenmorangie malt is sold to brokers in that form; such procedure is called throughout industry as spooning and prevents third party single malt bottlings. The whisky distilled in 1997 was aged in ex-sherry casks (no’s 3353-3357), finished for 8 months in second fill ex-PX sherry casks and bottled by Wilson & Morgan as part of Barrel Selection range in 2014.
Nose: beautifully balanced, buttered toast, honey, butterscotch, roasted nuts, oranges, apricots, dash of pepper, cinnamon, hints of tobacco and leather.
Palate: slightly waxy, butterscotch, vanilla cream, oranges, tangerines, apricots, chocolate-coated cherries, hazelnuts, pepper, nutmeg and faintest hint of smoke.
Finish: pretty long, spicy and nutty with notes of candied orange and lemon peel, hazelnuts, nutmeg and cinnamon.
