Strathisla Distillery, established 1876, celebrates its 230th Anniversary and its future looks quite optimistic. Not too many of us remember that the distillery went bankrupt in 1949 (its then owner was convicted of tax evasion) and if Chivas Bros. (then part of Seagram) didn’t come to rescue there is a chance we haven’t heard that name again. Strathisla immediately became backbone of Chivas Royal and the company didn’t take too much effort to promote it as single malt. In 1994 however, Seagram launched Heritage Selection, a series of single malts with 12 years old Strathisla being part of the range. The whisky was aged primarily in refill sherry casks.
Nose: malty and fruity, with certain nuttiness, faint sherry notes, dried flower petals, prunes, black grapes, toffee and hints of oak.
Palate: nicely balanced, with delicate sherry notes, hazelnuts, dark chocolate, toasted bread, prunes, raisins, caramel, toffee, traces of peat and oak.
Finish: pretty long and smooth, changing from sweet to dry, toffee, raisins, oak, mixed nuts and almonds.
