The Famous Grouse is one of the most popular Scotch whisky brands with annual sales of roughly 3 million cases. The brand debuted in 1896 under The Grouse name, the word “Famous” was added in 1905. We are all familiar with The Famous Grouse blended whisky line-up, it is worth to remind that blended malt and blend grain (Snow Grouse) used to be included in the range. In 2000 the company released the first vintage expression (1987) of The Famous Grouse blended malt and three more vintages: 1989, 1990 and 1992 followed until 2004. The key components of the blend are Macallan, Highland Park and Glenrothes with the addition of Tamdhu, Glengoyne and Bunnahabhain. The bottle of 1989 Vintage presented here was part of 2002 release.
Nose: rich with pretty strong sherry notes, honey, dark chocolate, prunes, dried figs, shredded coconut, cinnamon, hints of hay and licorice and touch of peat.
Palate: lots of sherry, roasted almonds, gingerbread, candied orange peel, prunes, raisins, cinnamon, dash of pepper and fading hint of smoke.
Finish: pretty long, with notes of roasted almonds, dark chocolate, dried fruit and oak.
