Wild Turkey brand was introduced in 1942 by Thomas McCarthy, then president of Austin, Nichols & Co., a distributor of alcoholic beverages. Couple years earlier McCarthy took a bottle of one of the company bourbons (probably product of J.T.S. Brown Distillery) to an annual turkey-hunting trip. His friends were so impressed with the bourbon that started calling it Wild Turkey. In 1970 the company purchased the distillery in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, which became home of Wild Turkey bourbon. The Rare Breed expression was introduced in 1991. It is a marriage of 6, 8 and 12 years old Wild Turkeys bottled in small batches at natural strength. The whiskey was a brainchild of the legendary master distiller Jimmy Russell.
