The original Lochnagar Distillery was founded by James Robertson in 1823 and just three years later was burnt to the ground by his competitors. Robertson established a new one near the mountain Lochnagar but it also burnt down. Finally in 1845 John Begg built new distillery and named it New Lochnagar. In 1848 Queen Victoria and Prince Albert visited the distillery and immediately awarded it with Royal Warrant. To commemorate the visit to the distillery Royal Lochnagar annually releases the Selected Reserve expression, a vatting of selected casks (predominantly ex-sherry) usually of 18-20 years of age. The 2008 release was limited to 6540 bottles.
