Bushmills Distillery loves to make a claim to be the oldest distillery in the world based on 7-year distilling license granted to Sir Thomas Phillipps in April 1608. Those days such permits were very common, in fact three months earlier, in January, similar license was granted to Charles Waterhouse and it covered the location where Middleton Distillery is working today. We will not try to solve the seniority issue, Bushmills has been working on its current site since 1784 what makes it pretty old distillery. Bushmills 12 years old Distillery Reserve is a lovely single malt available exclusively at the distillery with an option of personalized label. The whisky was aged predominantly in ex-Oloroso sherry casks and bottled at 40% abv.
Nose: soft, fruity and elegant, pretty strong sherry statement, plums, oranges, bananas, walnuts, almonds, hints of marzipan and very subtle spicy notes.
Palate: well balanced, vanilla custard, caramel, milk chocolate, candied ginger, hints of pepper and cinnamon, faint notes of dried fruit and subtle oaky and nutty notes.
Finish: fairly long, with notes of sherry, caramel, cinnamon and dried fruit.
